Winter Writer’s Retreat

Spend the entire day utterly enmeshed in your writing project without distraction, but full of support. This full day retreat held at the rustic Crested Butte Nordic Center’s Magic Meadows Yurt gives you secluded and quiet space, time to focus, and a true removal from external interference in the stillness of the woods. All the logistics are taken care of – including a hot lunch, tea and snacks so your sole goal is putting words to paper. After a refreshing and mind-clearing short ski or snowshoe to the yurt with the community of writers, the retreat begins with a brief writing prompt to get the creative juices flowing, before delving into a series of serious, silent two-hour writing sessions divided by periods of lunch and snacks. The schedule holds six hours of non-instructional solid writing time, done in the group, but where you have the freedom to work independently on your own project. We conclude with an optional sharing period before skiing back out. Mountain Writing Cooperative members receive a $10 discount.

Facilitator: Molly Murfee
Cost: $60
When: Saturday, January 11

Instructions for Participation
  • To get to the Nordic yurt the group will ski and snowshoe together one mile on an easy trail, taking approximately 30 minutes.
  • If you do not have a Nordic trails season pass you will need to purchase a day pass from the Nordic Center for $20. Similarly, if you don’t have snowshoes or cross-country skis you will need to procure these on your own (each are available for rent at the Nordic Center for $20). These items are additional expenses beyond the retreat price.
  • The group meets at the Nordic Center to carpool to the trailhead at 8 a.m. All passes and rental gear should be secured ahead of time to assure expediency.
  • Please come with your laptop fully charged with extra batteries if your computer cannot last for six hours of work. There is solar power at the yurt, but most likely not enough to charge a group of computers. Contact us if you have concerns about the battery power of your laptop, as solutions might be found to allow you to participate.
  • Bring any tools you need for your project, including paper, writing utensils, books, notes, etc.
  • Bring a mug, bowl, napkin and utensils for lunch and snacks.
  • While the yurt will be heated by wood burning stove and therefore a warm space, dress warmly for the ski out and back, and have extra layers while sitting during the writing sessions to assure your comfort.
  • Tables and chairs are provided, but there is no internet or cell service at the yurt.
  • Three two-hour writing sessions are facilitated for the group. If you choose to skip a writing session to take a lap out on the Nordic trails, you may do so.
  • The final writing session ends at 4:15 p.m. with a 45-minute sharing period following. We will then leave at approximately 5 p.m. for our 30-minute ski back to the trailhead.
