  • 9 – 11 am:  Lecture & Demo: Composition: Building a Solid Foundation with Dan Marshall.  $35
Every good painting needs to have a strong base. Dan both lectures and demonstrates tried and true compositional truths, showing how a great composition creates balance in your paintings, regardless of subject matter. A better understanding of the rules allows us the freedom to break them. Key takeaways are:  Using the Rule of Thirds, learning tried and true compositions, creating balance in your paintings, use of directionals, and using your reference to create, not duplicate.
  • 9 – 10:30 am:  Demonstration with Steve Griggs.  $35
With fun and humor, Steve Griggs demonstrates his unique style of loose, moving, and evocative watercolor painting. Taking ‘loose’ to a new level, Steve uses bold lines, shapes, and color to create expressive paintings that draw the viewer into the scene. Learn about making friends with your watercolors, taking risks, and sketching freely.
  • 12 – 4 pm:  Painting in a 3 Wash Process with Dan Marshall.  $75
Dan leads the class through 2 demonstrations, detailing his overall approach to exploiting the full range of watercolor – in a demo and then master copy format.  Key takeaways are:  Using the full range of watercolor, composition, drawing for painting, maintaining color harmony, and developing a process.

Want to learn to create moving and evocative landscape watercolor paintings but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you’ve got a good start but want to continue to grow your skills. This is the class for you!
Watercolor paints can be pretty free spirited and unpredictable unless you know how to work with them. In this class you will learn Steve’s method for understanding your paints while giving voice to your own artistic style.
Learn Steve’s strategy for becoming friends with your paint in order to create beautiful, moving landscape paintings with energy, freedom, and fascinating stories.
You’ll be surprised what you can do with a paintbrush, an open mind, and a sense of humor. Come and find out!
  • 1 – 4 pm:  Painting Outside the Box: Wax Paper with Janet Nunn.  $65

Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors.  Bring your brushes and watercolor supplies.  Dr. Ph. Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors are provided by the instructor.
  • 5 – 7 pm:  Keynote Lecture: Composition & Analyzing Award Winners in Major Water Media Exhibitions.  With Stephen Quiller.  $25
An important talk for the serious painter, this Keynote event is divided into two portions. The evening begins with a presentation on composition and learning to see abstractly.  During the second portion, Mr. Quiller gives an analysis of the top 20 award-winning paintings in two major water media exhibitions: the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society.  Mr. Quiller talks about each of the paintings and what made them stand out. This Keynote Lecture is a not to be missed event at the Symposium.
