This program looks at how shifts in life can mirror the uncertainty we all face. Each piece reminds us that even in times of change and discomfort, there’s potential to adapt, grow, and imagine new possibilities. Shifting Forms features a World Premiere by acclaimed choreographer Garrett Smith, the poignant Mother Tongue by Ihsan Rustem, and the return of audience favorite Ever After by Yin Yue. Guest Choreographers
Garrett Smith
Garrett Smith is an internationally recognized choreographer whose work has been commissioned by companies including the Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, New York City Ballet, and Houston Ballet. Originally from Utah, he began his career as a dancer with Houston Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet before turning his focus to choreography. His work blends striking visuals with themes of identity and self-reflection. He currently serves as resident choreographer for Vitacca Ballet and is a frequent guest artist and adjudicator worldwide.
Ihsan Rustem
Ihsan Rustem is the Artistic Director of Cie. La Ronde and Resident Choreographer for NW Dance Project. His choreography has been commissioned by companies including Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, and São Paulo City Ballet. His accolades include the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest, Dance Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award, and the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago International Commissioning Project. Rustem previously danced with companies across Europe and now lives in Zurich, Switzerland.
Yin Yue
Yue Yin is the founder and Artistic Director of YY Dance Company (YYDC), based in NYC. A graduate of the Shanghai Dance Academy and NYU Tisch, her work fuses Chinese dance, folk, and contemporary movement through her signature FoCo Technique™. She has received commissions from companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Boston Ballet, and Philadelphia Ballet, and is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the 2021 Dance Magazine Harkness Promise Award.
