Local Luminaries Series: The bountiful to the desolate

August 23, 2022 by Jillian

Local Luminaries Series:
The bountiful to the desolate: An artistic adventure from Crested Butte to Bombay Beach

Join us for the next installment of the Local Luminaries series celebrating artists Sean Guerrero, John Murphy, Juanita Hull-Carlson (Nita), and Royce Carlson. The evening will include conversation, documentary short film screening on their giant collaborative Bombay Beach sculpture, and artist reception from these four legendary large-format artists.

Artist Bios:

Born in Long Island NY, Sean Guerrero has had an affinity for older car culture. Currently living between Paonia and Crested Butte, his travels throughout the desert southwest give him inspiration for the upcycled sculptures he creates that vary in theme from mid-evil to contemporary to science fiction. Some of his clients include CEO’s of major film companies to musicians, such as Neil Young.

John Murphy: “I have been enjoying my career as an ornamental blacksmith for the past 25 years creating architectural elements for homes in and around Gunnison County. After a hiatus from sculpture, I have been recently inspired by Sean, Royce, and Nita with our creative experience with the DaVinci Fish, (Bombay Beach CA. 2019) to make sculpture more of a priority in the coming years.

Paonia, Colorado artist, Royce Carlson, has been a steel sculptor for over 20 years and blends new steel fabrication with found objects to produce his whimsical kinetic creations.

Juanita Hull-Carlson (Nita) has been a teaching artist her whole adult life. After earning degrees in art education, ceramics and illustration she began exploring large-scale cement sculpture and mosaic. Public art has the benefit of teaching viewers the beauty and potential of broken dishes, glass bottles, and such. A biding affection for our planet fuels this creative recycling.
