YAN-KA-DY: An African Arts theater extravaganza

Yankady in the language of Susu from Guinea, West Africa means “here is good.” Fara Tolno, director, choreographer, and visionary of the theater performance has orchestrated a night of music, dance, acrobatics, and more with the exciting and dynamic rhythms and movements of Guinea. Set with the intention of celebrating, he states “despite all that is happening, we have each other, and that is why here is good.” Doors and bar open at 6:30, come early to learn more about the Kissidugu school of Music, Dance and Education in Guinea, West Africa and local youth and adult programming. Theater show at 7:30. Prior to the show, artists will be teaching classes for all ages and abilities in the Gunnison Valley from March 6th-17th.

March in Motion dance classes

Classes in the West African Arts occurring March 6th-17th. All classes rooted in health and wellness and aim for inclusivity of the greatest population regardless of age or ability. Each class is a unique opportunity for cultural arts education, exchange and exposure. Classes in music, movement and song positively impact mental, physical and social health. All are welcome! Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes that allow for freedom of movement. Most dance classes accompanied by live musicians and drums will be provided for students as needed. Experience an array of kind and talented teachers from Guinea who cannot wait to share their culture with you! The endow class sessions will conclude with an incredible performance by visiting arts on Friday March 18th.

Fara Tolno West African Dance – Kissidugu Foundation

To celebrate and honor Black History Month and equity in the arts this February, the Center for the Arts + the Kissidugu Foundation will collaborate to bring renowned artist and educator Fara Tolno, from Guinea, West Africa, to the Gunnison Valley for a three-week, valley-wide cultural enrichment residency.
 
All-level, community classes at the Center for the Arts in traditional Guinean dance and drumming, Afro-fusion dance, DunDun dance, along with ongoing intensive classes, and drum and dance classes for kids will be taught by Fara Tolno and accompanied by Etienne Tolno. The ongoing adult classes will culminate in a community performance piece that will be a part of a virtual performance. Check out the full lineup here.
