Artist Biography

Karen was born and raised in a small community north of Salt Lake City, Utah. She began her study of art early in life and still enjoys attending classes and workshops taught by fellow artists. She has studied under the direction of such well-known Utah artists as the late Anton J. Rasmussen and Willamarie Huelskamp. Her works have been displayed in the Park City Kimball Art Center, the University of Utah, the Bountiful /Davis County Arts Center, the Denver Teller Street Gallery & Studios, at Utah and Colorado Watercolor Society exhibits, at the Gunnison Arts Center and in retail and private collections in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and California. Karen has taught watercolor painting for over thirty years; most recently at the Gunnison Arts Center and the Center for the Arts Crested Butte. Her classes range from beginning to advanced instruction. She has served on the board of the Colorado Watercolor Society (CWS) and has achieved Signature Status with the CWS. Karen has also served as President of the Western Slope Chapter of the CWS. Before beginning a painting or drawing, she will spend a considerable amount of time visualizing what she wants to capture and convey to the viewer. The focus is not always on the literal accuracy of producing an image but rather on her own interpretation and, at times, she incorporates abstract lines and vibrant colors. She enjoys experimenting and exploring new techniques by painting on canvas, rice paper and YUPO. Karen states, “Because of the inexhaustible opportunities and challenges of expression, I’m continually trying to develop, refine and reinvent my drawing and painting techniques.”

In-Depth Watercolor with Karen Hill

April 5, 2022 by Brooke Harless MacMillan Leave a Comment

Dive deeper into watercolor painting over 6 weeks with beloved Watercolor & Wine instructor Karen Hill and her watercolor workshops. Karen is a wealth of knowledge, and we are thrilled to offer the opportunity to study technical aspects of watercolor painting with her. Explore principles of design, color, and technique. Work on technical skills like wet-on-wet, glazing, preserving the white of the paper, understanding shadow, and creating dramatic skies. The watercolor workshop supplies are not included.

In-Depth Watercolor with Karen Hill

Thursdays, April 28, May 5, 12, 19, 26, June 2

4:30 – 7:30 pm

$200 for 6-class series or $50 per session. Take one or all

Materials list:

Unlike Watercolor & Wine, supplies are not included with this course, so please bring the recommended supplies listed below (or comparable supplies of your choosing). Please note that supplies may be purchased at Pfister Handworks, 302 Elk Ave, Crested Butte, or Dick Blick online.

For supply questions, please contact Karen: krh7120@gmail.com.

Paper: 140 lb. Strathmore watercolor paper, 18” x 24”

Brushes: The brushes are a basic watercolor supply that can make a difference in
how easily it is to learn and work with watercolor. The most important thing is to
get brushes made for watercolor not acrylic or oil brushes. There are better and
better synthetic watercolor brushes, three brands that are decent are Princeton
Neptune, Golden Fleece by Cheap Joes, and Grey Matters by Jack Richeson. My
current favorite brushes that cost a little more than synthetic brushes are a brand
called Silver – Black Velvet. These brushes are a blend brush made with half
synthetic bristles and half natural hair
Round, sizes 6, 10, 12; Flat, sizes 1”, 2”

Paints: Daniel Smith – Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue, Quinacridone Rose,
Aureolin (Cobalt Yellow), Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Red, Lemon
Yellow or Hansa Yellow Light, New Gamboge, Quinacridone Gold, Sap Green,
Quinacridone Magenta, and Cerulean Blue

Palette: Palette or white plastic plate 8” or larger

Misc.: Paper towels (I use Viva brand, extra absorbent because they hold up well and NO
texture)
Sponges
Magic Erase
Sharp Scraper
Pencils

Masking Fluid and sticks (the sticks are used to apply the masking fluid): Removable Masking fluid or frisket (make sure it doesn’t

say ‘permanent.’ I use the Windsor and Newton, colorless art masking fluid) Do not shake masking fluid.
