Postmodern Jukebox

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox

Saturday, October 29th, 2022

doors 7 pm | show 8 pm

Steddy Theater

Crested Butte, are you ready for a Halloween weekend extravaganza with the sensational Postmodern Jukebox? Come dressed to the nines in vintage Hollywood glam, ready for a night you will not forget.

When New York City pianist Scott Bradlee created Postmodern Jukebox out of a basement in Queens in 2011, his goal was simple: to remake the pop hits of today into the classic sounds of the legends of yesterday. Miley Cyrus became The Platters. Bruno Mars became Frank Sinatra. The Spice Girls became The Andrews Sisters. Guns ’n’ Roses became Bessie Smith.

Now, nearly a decade later, Postmodern Jukebox has grown to become a pop culture mainstay in its own right, having played over a thousand shows on six continents worldwide — including acclaimed venues like Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. In the process, PMJ has introduced audience to many of the world’s greatest singers, dancers, and instrumentalist — many of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right.

One part celebration of vintage music and culture, one part “’Saturday Night Live’ for singers”, a Postmodern Jukebox show is an unforgettable trip back in time that makes Pop Music History — in your own hometown.

Jackie Greene & Anders Osborne

Tourgether

Not too long-ago, Anders Osborne and Jackie Greene were booked to do a few solo acoustic shows together. One thought, and the other agreed, that the shows would be a helluva lot more fun if they joined together and did them “in the round.” For two friends that are gifted as both singer-songwriters and guitarists—impromptu “jamming” is second nature. But for these shows, they’ve ditched their bands for some stripped down acoustic performances, each taking a turn with one of their songs, while the other provides accompaniment.

It was a great experience for each of them and audience alike and Jackie and Anders are excited to continue this sit-down evening of old fashioned tune trading.

The Wood Brothers

The Wood Brothers didn’t know they were making a record. Looking back, they’re grateful for that. “If we hadknown, we probably would have been too self-conscious to play what we played,” reflects bassist/vocalist Chris Wood. “At the time, we just thought we were jamming to break in our new studio, so we felt free to explore all these different ways of performing together without worrying about form or structure. It was liberating.”Recorded live to tape, those freewheeling, improvised sessions became a vast pool of source material from which The Wood Brothers would go on to draw ‘Kingdom In My Mind,’ their seventhstudio release and most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. While on past records, the band—Chris, guitarist/vocalist Oliver Wood, and drummer/keyboardist Jano Rix—would write a large batch of songs and then record them all at once, ‘Kingdom’ found them retroactively carving tunes out of sprawling instrumental jam sessions like sculptors chipping away at blocks of marble. A testament to the limitless creativity of the unharnessed mind, the record explores the power of our external surroundings to shape our internal worlds (and vice versa), reckoning with time, mortality, and human nature. The songs here find strength in accepting what lies beyond our control, thoughtfully honing in on the bittersweet beauty that underlies doubt and pain and sadness with vivid character studies and unflinching self-examination. Deep as the lyrics dig, the arrangements always manage to remain buoyant and light, though, drawing from across a broad sonic spectrum to create a transportive, effervescent blend that reflects the trio’s unique place in the modern musical landscape.“My brothercame to this band from the blues and gospel world, and my history was allover the map withjazz and R&B,” says Chris, who first rose to fame with the pioneering trio Medeski Martin& Wood. “The idea for this group has always been to marry our backgrounds, to imagine what might happen if Robert Johnson and Charles Mingus had started a band together.”‘Kingdom In My Mind’ follows The Wood Brothers’most recent studio release, 2018’s ‘One Drop Of Truth,’ which hit #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and garneredthe band their firstGRAMMY nomination for Best Americana Album. NPRpraised the record’s “unexpected changes and kaleidoscopic array of influences,” while Uncuthailed its “virtuosic performances and subtly evocative lyrics,” and Blurtproclaimed it “a career-defining album.” Tracks from the record racked up roughly 8 million streams on Spotifyalone, and the band took the album on the road for extensive tour dates in the US andEurope, including their first-ever headline performance at Red Rocks, two nights at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore (captured on their 2019 release, ‘Live At The Fillmore’),and festival appearances everywhere from Bonnaroo to XPoNential.

Leftover Salmon Night 2

Leftover Salmon

Few bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. Since their earliest days as a forward thinking, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly, unique style.

As Leftover Salmon nears their 30th year, their inspiring story is set to be told in a brand new book, Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival! that will be released February 2019 by Rowman & Littlefield. In this book, critically acclaimed author of Bluegrass in Baltimore: The Hard Drivin’ Sound & It’s Legacy, Tim Newby presents an intimate portrait of Leftover Salmon through the personal recollections of its band members, family, friends, former band-mates, managers, and the countless musicians they have influenced. Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival! is a thorough guide covering a thirty-year journey of a truly remarkable band. It is a tale of friendships and losses, musical discoveries and Wild West adventures, and the brethren they surround themselves with who fortify Salmon’s unique voice. Their story is one of tragedy and rebirth, of unimaginable highs and crushing lows, of friendships, of music, but most importantly it is the story of a special band and those that have lived through it all to create, inspire, and have everlasting fun.

Heading into their fourth decade Leftover Salmon is showing no signs of slowing down as they are coming off the release of their most recent album, Something Higher (released in 2018) which has been universally hailed as one of the band’s finest releases. Something Higher shows how even upon preparing to enter their fourth decade Leftover Salmon is proving it possible to recreate themselves without changing who they are. The band now features a line-up that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn, and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Alwyn Robinson, and keyboardist Erik Deutsch. The new line-up is continuing the long, storied history of Salmon which found them first emerging from the progressive bluegrass world and coming of age as one the original jam bands, before rising to become architects of what has become known as Jamgrass and helping to create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass can break free of those bonds through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions live. Salmon is a band who over their thirty-year career has never stood still; they are constantly changing, evolving, and inspiring. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show, where they effortlessly glide from a bluegrass number born on the front porch, to the down-and-dirty Cajun swamps with a stop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville, before firing one up in the mountains of Colorado.

Featured Sponsor: REG

September 27, 2021 by Jillian Leave a Comment

Our next sponsor in the spotlight is Resource Engineering Group Inc. REG is a company that covers all aspects of engineering buildings, such as structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. They even contributed all of the incredible engineering during the construction of our very own new Center for the Arts building. According to August Hasz, the president of REG, their process is about “reducing the resources it takes to build, maintain, and operate these buildings.”

August supports the Center because he believes it is, “an asset to the community, and it gives people a place to gather.”

REG has been a valuable sponsor for the Center for the arts most predominantly because of their involvement with the construction, as well as in the years before. August himself has been attending Center events since 1997, when he attended the opening for Matchsticks Production’s Pura Vida. Along with Pura Vida, August’s favorite memory at the Center was Karl Densen’s Tiny Universe show.

Something August is most looking forward to is seeing a wide variety of live music in the future of the Center (and hopefully this summer). Thank you August and everyone at REG for your support of the Center!
