Mel Yemma

Jokerville

August 8, 2019 by Mel Yemma Leave a Comment

Artist: Ben Eaton
Location: Mallardi Theatre, corner of 2nd St. and Elk Ave.
Medium: Forged steel

The Town of Crested Butte was only four years old when tragedy struck early on the morning of January 24, 1884.  On that cold morning, a massive explosion (likely caused by ‘fire damp’, the term used for methane gas mixing with air and coal dust) ripped through the Jokerville Mine, killing 60 men. The impact was heart-wrenching for the four hundred hearty souls who called the town home, as well as the additional 1,000 miners residing in camps nearby.  At the time, the Jokerville Mine explosion was the worst mining disaster ever in Colorado.  Today, it stands as the state’s third most deadly.

Jokerville was forged by local blacksmith and sculptor Ben Eaton to honor the men trapped in the mine on that fateful day. The hanging piece is what Ben describes as ‘Line Art’, which is basically an image broken down to its simplest elements.  The ever-changing elements of light and shadow play an important part of the artwork and undeniably add to the moodiness of the image.  Some historical accounts state the victims were brought to the Town Hall (now the Mallardi Theatre where the artwork hangs) as a temporary morgue.  Others say they were laid out in a local blacksmith’s shop.  The truth lies buried with time, but either way it seems appropriate that Ben’s powerful sculpture exists to pay tribute to the victims.

In June of 2017, the Crested Butte Creative District and the Town of Crested Butte developed and passed an Arts in Public Places (AIPP) policy.  The policy specifies that 2% of any capital project in the Creative District or a Town Park shall be dedicated to the creation of public art.  Jokerville is the inaugural installation utilizing the AIPP.

Ben Eaton uses traditional blacksmithing tools and techniques to create his sculptures and functional ironwork. More info is available at www.getbentllc.com.

Little Free Library

August 8, 2019 by Mel Yemma Leave a Comment

Artists: Alex Riedman/ Rob Lindsey/ Kate Seeley/ Levi Rugheimer
Location: Bus stop at the 4-way stop
Medium: Wood, Glass, Paint, Metal, Books!

What better time to browse through a selection of books than while waiting for a bus? That’s what Alex Riedman, an employee of the Crested Butte Library, thought when she became aware of the opportunity to receive a grant through the Crested Butte Creative District for a project.  She gathered a talented collection of local artists and the CB Little Free Library opened its mini-doors in May 2018.

Neighborhood book exchanges aren’t a new thing, but the movement began to gain strength in 2009, when Todd H. Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin built the first Little Free Library in honor of his mother, a schoolteacher and lifelong reader.  In 2012, after seeing how the ‘take a book, share a book’ concept resonated with his neighbors, he co-founded a non-profit with the goal of inspiring readers and strengthening communities.  There are now more than 80,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges around the world in 88 countries.

The CB Little Free Library symbolizes community on many levels.  It was indeed a group effort, as Alex’s vision was brought to fruition by a wonderful team of craftspeople.  Its construction was the work Rob Lindsey, who coincidentally already had a connection to the Little Free Library movement.  Hailing from a family of librarians and readers, he and his family had spearheaded the building and placement of libraries across the country in honor of a young cousin who had passed away.  Kate Seeley’s whimsical artwork provides the perfect background for books that hold such promise of exploration and adventure.  Levi Rugheimer crafted the door handles.

Alex’s hopes were for a community resource, available to young and old, visitors and locals alike.  There is something special about finding or leaving a book at this little library…not knowing who placed it or who will next read your treasure!

Want to create a library in your community?  More information about the movement is available at www.littlefreelibrary.org

Anima on 3rd Street

August 8, 2019 by Mel Yemma Leave a Comment

Artist: Heather Bischoff
Location: 308 3rd St. (near public restrooms by CB Fire Station)
Medium: Mixed media (newsprint collage, paint)

Anima: the soul or animating principle of a living thing; breath; essence.

As Heather Bischoff hiked through the Dark Canyon/Raggeds Wilderness west of Crested Butte, she was awed and inspired by the local flora and fauna living there.  She set out to honor that spirit and Anima on 3rd Street is the result.

The world-record Plute Elk (which resides at the CB Heritage Museum) was shot in 1899 in that very wilderness, and was the model for the brightly colored bull elk that hovers, solid yet ethereal, amidst the aspen forest of the mural. His eyes gaze steadily at the viewer, as do the ubiquitous eyes of the aspen trees, inviting us to explore and connect with our high mountain community. Given that aspens function as a single interconnected organism, they are the perfect symbol of interdependence.  Here their bark is created from recycled newspaper, giving the sense that our history and stories are intricately tied with those of the natural world.  The reclaimed materials also hint at the cyclical nature of our existence: what once was a tree became a product of human consumption, only to turn up again as a tree.

Heather currently resides in Crested Butte, though travels frequently to collect materials and cultural experiences to inform her work. Learn more about Heather at www.bishproductions.org or on instagram @postmasterbish.

CALL FOR ARTISTS: Town Park Sculpture Garden

April 3, 2019 by Mel Yemma Leave a Comment

The Creative District is requesting proposals from creative individuals for the installation of unique, outdoor three-dimensional art or sculptures for Crested Butte Town Park. There is the potential for one permanent sculpture and two temporary sculptures or installations.

There is an opportunity for three sculptures to be featured on in-ground concrete pedestals adjacent to the Center for the Arts building along the walking path in Town Park. The Creative District will also welcome proposals for temporary public art that could be anchored in the ground without a pedestal (but could be easily moved if a utility issue arose). A site plan including installation locations and pedestal locations is shown in Appendix A in the RFP.

The Creative District is also welcoming of proposals that include installations that move beyond a single sculpture that might include (but are not limited to) interactive or multimedia work. All selected temporary proposals will be installed for the summer season from July 1, 2019-October 15, 2019. The permanent sculpture will need to be installed prior to August 15, 2019.

Proposals are due on

Friday, May 17, 2019 by 5 p.m.

Proposals may be submitted directly to the Creative District (directions are in the RFP) or submitted via CAFE by clicking HERE.

The Town Park Sculpture Garden is a collaborative effort by the Crested Butte Creative District, Town of Crested Butte, Crested Butte Center for the Arts, and Colorado Creative Industries. This project is a component of Crested Butte’s Arts in Public Places Policy.

Calling Creative District gallery owners! The Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival, an annual fundraiser for the Center for the Arts, will hold an “Afternoon on Elk” on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 4-7 pm. Town Park Public Art Project

February 21, 2019 by Mel Yemma Leave a Comment

The Town Park Public Art Project is a collaborative effort by the Crested Butte Creative District, Town of Crested Butte, Crested Butte Center for the Arts, and Colorado Creative Industries. The purpose of this project is to enhance the sense of place in the Creative District by creating new  public art that provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work, encourages walkability throughout the Town, inspires youth engagement with the arts, and helps anchor the new Center for the Arts building in the heart of the Creative District. This project is a component of Crested Butte’s Arts in Public Places Policy (see below for more information about the policy).

The Town Park Public Art Project proposes two components: a Sculpture Garden and a potential Music Garden. A Sculpture Garden is proposed along the walking path on the North-side of the new Center for the Arts building, and an interactive Music Garden is proposed to be integrated into the new Mary Yelenick Playground. Click here to see the proposed site plan.

The Sculpture Garden could encompass three pedestals that will provide the opportunity to showcase three unique works of art. The Music Path component of this project includes potentially installing outdoor musical instruments in the new playground area that will inspire children of all ages to engage with the musical arts.

The photos below show examples of sculpture and music gardens in other communities. Click here to see an example of what these musical instruments look and sound like.

Your thoughts and feedback will help determine the specific parameters for the sculptures and musical instruments (the basic infrastructure for this project will be completed by July 1, 2019).

Sculpture Garden Examples

Music Garden Examples

The Creative District and its partners would like to hear from YOU on what you would like to see. Please attend the Community Forum on March 6th at the Center for the Arts to learn more and provide your feedback, or email your comments to melyemma@crestedbutte.co.gov by March 15, 2019.

We are especially interested in your thoughts on the following aspects of the project:

Sculpture Garden:

  • Would you like to see temporary sculptures, semi-permanent or permanent sculptures?
  • Would you like to see “for sale” sculptures?
  • What type of sculpture bases would fit well here? Above the ground, in the ground?
  • What ideas do you have?
  • What concerns do you have?

Music Garden:

  • Do you think a Music Garden is a good fit for this location and neighborhood?
  • How many instruments should be there?
  • What type of instruments should be there?
  • What ideas do you have?
  • What concerns do you have?

About the Arts in Public Places Policy (AIPP)

In 2017, the Creative District Commission developed the Arts in Public Places Policy (AIPP), which was then passed by the Town Council. The AIPP guides the selection, display, maintenance, and donation of public art. The location of the Center for the Arts was included in the policy as a location for public art, specifically for temporary installations and interactive art. This Town Park Public Art project will follow the guidelines of the AIPP for the selection, installation, and maintenance of these public art installations.
